A Guide to Activity 1 (Social Studies)

Dear Pupils of 5.9,

In order to complete Activity 1 of your SS Activity Book, you need to learn more about the Singapore government.

1) Find out about the ministers who are heading the various ministries in our government, and learn a little more about them from the website below!

Choose two ministers, print out their photographs (if possible) and write down their names and position in the ministry they head.

E.g. Name: Mr Teo Chee Hean
Position: Minister for Defence

Go the the respective ministry websites to find out what the responsibilities of these ministers are!

E.g. You can type in Ministry of Defence Singapore in www.google.com. When you are brought to the Ministry of Defence website, click 'About Us', 'Mission' (or 'Vision') and the purpose of the ministry will be highlighted on this page.

For instance, the responsibility of the Ministry of Defence is to " enhance Singapore's peace and security through deterrence and diplomacy, and should these fail, to secure a swift and decisive victory over the aggressor".

Based on your own understanding of what the above statement means, you can write this under the section 'Responsibilities'.

Responsibilities:
The Minister for Defence heads an organisation that protects and defends the safety of all Singaporeans and ensure that we can live in peace.

You will be given three days to work on Activity 1, please note that it will be due in class on Friday, 24 July 2009.
