Today, Singapore commemorates Total Defence Day as a reminder of the importance of staying united as one nation and doing our part to protect and defend ourselves against threats and challenges. The 15th of February was chosen to commemorate this special event as it was on this fateful day that Singapore fell to the Japanese in World War II, thereby marking the beginning of a period of darkness for all Singaporeans. The commemoration of Total Defence reminds us never to take peace for granted and to always stay vigilant and prepared to defend our home and loved ones should the need arise.
